Advice from a Festival Booth, a Stack of Books, and a Freelance Writer Who Started the Same Way You Might
This past weekend, I had a table at the Hastings Rivertown Days festival. And while I was there to share my books, I ended up having some of the best conversations about writing—and not just the storytelling kind.
High schoolers, college students, even a few recent grads. So many stopped by to ask about my journey into freelance writing. A surprising number were already thinking about how to build a flexible life that lets them write on their own terms. (Side note: Who knew I’d sell so many books at a non-book-focused event?)
And over and over again, I found myself answering the same question: How did you get started?
The short answer? Upwork.
Yes, the freelance platform. Back when I was just getting started, Upwork gave me a chance to test the waters, learn what clients needed, and get paid to do it. Today, even though my business has grown, I still use the platform—and about half of my current clients came from there.
If you’ve been thinking about freelance writing—or graphic design, marketing, admin work, you name it—here’s my advice: Don’t wait.
Why You Shouldn’t Wait to Start Your Upwork Profile
Upwork has more than 18 million freelancers and 5 million clients across 180+ countries. Yes, the competition is real, but so is the opportunity. In fact, one out of every 800 freelancers on Upwork makes over $1,000 a month. I happen to make much more than that, and it all started with a simple profile.
So if you’re waiting for the “right time” to get started, here’s why today is better than someday:
- You can’t get hired until your profile exists
- Building a profile now means you’re ready when the perfect job gets posted
- It takes time to refine your niche and build credibility—so start learning now
- You’ll learn what clients want (and what you don’t want)
- Even small jobs build experience, confidence, and your portfolio
Why Upwork Is Great for New Freelancers
Of all the platforms out there, Upwork continues to be one of the most accessible ways to break into freelancing. If you’re wondering whether Upwork is worth it, the answer is yes, especially when you’re just getting started. With a little patience and consistency, creating a winning Upwork profile can lead to real, paying work (not just vague promises or unpaid “exposure”).
Here’s why Upwork is such a great starting point for new freelancers:
- There’s always a pool of clients actively looking for help
- You can apply to gigs in multiple industries or specialties
- Payments are secure and handled through the platform
- You’ll build reviews and ratings that can open doors
- You’re in control of your rates, your hours, and the jobs you apply for
If you’re dreaming of a writing career that gives you freedom, flexibility, and the chance to grow while you earn, your Upwork profile is a great first step.
So… how is that profile coming along?
