What Makes the Perfect Writing Room? 10 Suggestions for Freelance Bloggers

Picture this: You, your laptop, and a steaming cup of coffee in your very own writing sanctuary. If you’ve ever wondered what it takes to craft the ideal writing room, look no further. My 10 suggestions are tailor-made for freelance bloggers like you, ready to turn that dedicated space into a creative powerhouse.

So, what’s the secret recipe for a productive, inspiring, and, yes, lighthearted writing room?

1. Claim that Extra Room as Yours

You’ve got that spare room, and it’s time to stake your claim! If you’re lucky enough to have an extra room with a door that closes, consider it your writing domain. This not only provides the privacy essential for staying in the zone but also establishes a clear boundary with your family.

The rule is simple: When the door’s closed, kindly knock before entering. When it’s open, you’re open to interruptions and visitors, making your space work for you.

2. Closet or Storage Space

If you’re one of the lucky ones with a dedicated room for your freelance business, don’t overlook the power of a closet or storage system. In my spare bedroom-turned-office, I transformed the closet into a haven that draws upon my self-proclaimed OCD.

An old bookcase that used to sit in one of my kid’s bedrooms has been repurposed as storage and accommodates reams of paper, labeling devices, extra cords, and all those odds and ends that keep my freelance hustle on track. Maximizing closet space – a simple yet effective hack for a clutter-free writing room.

Seriously, this process helps keep the clutter out of my sight when I am working. And, I feel so much more professional because it is all neatly stored away.

3. Multiple Seating Options

Versatility is the name of the game in the perfect writing room. In my trusty home office, I’ve got a traditional desk where I do the bulk of my writing – spacious and equipped with an extra monitor for multitasking magic.

Yet, I also keep a second reclining-type chair with a footrest nearby. Sometimes, a change of scenery within the room is all it takes to boost creativity. I’ll grab my laptop and cozy blanket, and prop my feet up for a refreshing change of pace, just a few feet away. Options, my fellow writers, make all the difference.

4. A Way to Move Your Body

For us freelance bloggers and copywriters, the struggle to balance productivity with staying active is real. If you’re one of those talented bloggers who can type and walk simultaneously, kudos! A walking treadmill might be your health hack of choice. As for the rest of us, a compact treadmill tucked into your writing room can seriously be a welcome respite.

When words hit a wall, or the sitting marathon feels endless, I slip into my sneakers, power on the TV in the corner, and take a stroll. Even just 10 minutes can invigorate the mind (although, remember to aim for more than 10 minutes of daily activity). Incorporating movement into your writing routine is a smart health move, without a doubt.

5. The Right Wall Colors

Don’t underestimate the power of color in your writing room. It’s not just about aesthetics; it can profoundly affect your mood and creativity. According to Mental Health America, bright, warm colors like reds, oranges, and yellows can ignite energy and happiness, while cool, subdued hues like blues, greens, and purples have a soothing, calming effect.

When crafting your ideal writing space, consider your goals. For me, a soft grey palette strikes the perfect balance. It keeps distractions at bay while emanating a cozy warmth. So, whether you opt for energetic or tranquil shades, choose colors that resonate with your creative spirit, and let the inspiration flow.

6. Lighting Options

I’ll confess, that I might be a tad obsessed with lighting, much to my husband’s amusement. My writing room boasts not one, not two, but four sources of illumination, each serving its purpose. First, the overhead light brightens up the room during the daytime hustle. In the evenings, I switch to a trusty desk lamp for a cozy, focused glow.

But here’s where it gets fun: a happy light mimics sunlight, boosting my mood, energy, and focus minus those pesky UV rays. And for those video calls and content creation days, a ring light steps in, ensuring I shine my brightest. So, don’t underestimate the magic of well-placed lighting in your writing oasis—it can truly transform your space.

7. Writing Tools

Let’s state the obvious: as Gallup would ask in their trusty employee engagement survey; do you have the right materials and equipment to do your job? As a proud MacBook enthusiast, my trusty MacBook Pro, with its robust 16 GB Apple M2 Pro, is my lifeline. It’s where my creative world thrives (shoutout to Google Docs and shared drives for backup).

The message here is simple: find the writing device that resonates with your workflow. Whether you’re a traditional laptop aficionado or a Mac devotee, the right tool can make all the difference. Just remember, when your trusty companion starts showing signs of aging, consider an upgrade. Don’t be a freelance blogger without the equipment you need. Your work deserves a reliable partner that keeps up with your brilliance.

8. Inspiring Decor

Decor isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about creating a space that feels like your creative haven. Some writers find inspiration in artwork adorning their walls or a potted plant gracing a table beside their comfy chair. While my writing room isn’t the ideal spot for plants due to window placement and allergies, it might be perfect for you.

These additions can infuse your space with a comforting, familiar ambiance. Plus, indoor plants have been known to enhance focus, reduce depressive moods, and alleviate symptoms of anxiety. So, whether it’s a canvas that speaks to you or a lush green companion, let your decor reflect your writing sanctuary’s unique personality.

9. Cozies

Living in Minnesota means cozying up is a survival skill during our long, cold winters. That’s why my writing room is well-equipped with blankets. A colossal 10×10 family blanket drapes over my reclining chair, ready to ward off the chill, while a smaller one keeps me snug at my desk.

Staying comfortable is more than just a creature comfort; it’s a productivity boost. Whether it’s a space heater for added warmth or a fan to stay cool in sunnier climes, find what makes you feel cozy and focused in your writing sanctuary.

10. Ergonomics

Ergonomics is all about optimizing efficiency in your working environment, focusing on preventing awkward postures, stressful movements, and repetitive motions. It extends to the workplace’s overall comfort, addressing factors like temperature, lighting, noise, and vibration. But what does it mean for your writing room?

For starters, ensure your primary chair is precisely positioned at your desk – the right height to prevent arm and leg fatigue. Maybe a footrest is in order for proper alignment or some lumbar support for your office chair. Taking the time to fine-tune your workspace for your body’s needs is a must.

If you find yourself sore at the end of a writing marathon, it’s a sign your chair and desk aren’t playing nice with your body. Ergonomics is the secret sauce to a comfortable and highly productive writing room.
