While I’ve been in the content marketing space for a long time, it took me a while to truly realize how important social media is for my business. Specifically, I’m talking about Instagram.

If you’ve been following the Copywriting For You blog, you already know I’ve been pretty public about my latency in getting my business up on social media platforms. It’s something I regret in a totally big way. And Instagram? I’ll never fully understand why I held out on this platform for so long. But I’m here to tell you that if you are a freelance copywriter or you spend more of your time with content writing—like me—Instagram is just one of those places you need to be.

Growing Followers on Instagram

I’ll be upfront. I have a long way to go in growing my social media followers. However, since this platform has about 166.15 million active users in the U.S. alone, there are plenty of folks out there for me to find. And, I think I am well on my way. My follower base is growing steadily, and I have twice as many followers as I did when I started posting content more regularly in June 2024. I take that as a pretty big win.

So why is growing your Instagram followers so important? Simply put, more followers mean more people see your content, which leads to more potential clients. But as a copywriter, you might wonder, What kind of images do I even post?

This was a big question for me, too. After all, I’m not selling a physical product; I’m selling words. That’s where creativity with visuals comes into play. I like to mix it up with images from business photo shoots, screenshots of the images from my latest blog posts, and images from my YouTube vlog—note, you should totally subscribe to my channel. I’m fun! I promise!

I’ve found that sharing personal elements, like my love for reading, also helps me connect with my audience. As a voracious reader, I regularly post about the books I’m reading. Connecting with other readers has not only grown my following but also made me a better writer by exposing me to new ideas and voices.

Here are a few ways to grow your Instagram following as a copywriter:

  • Post consistently: Regular updates keep you visible to your audience.
  • Use relevant hashtags: This can help you reach more people interested in your niche.
  • Engage with your followers: Comment on their posts, respond to messages, and build genuine connections.
  • Share valuable content: Offer writing tips, share insights, and show off your work.

Content Ideas for Freelance Writers

Okay, so at this point you know that you should post. And, you even have an idea of how often you should post—consistency is key. Hashtags aren’t a problem as you probably know that stuff like the back of your own hand.

But still, you are wondering what you should post about. Here are some ideas from my own content plan. And since there is plenty of work out there for all of us, feel free to beg, borrow, and steal, as long as your approach to the content is uniquely you.

That said, creating engaging content about copywriting, blogging, and content creation doesn’t have to be complicated. Start with some simple images that you can whip up on Canva—who doesn’t love Canva?!—that highlight key points related to your niche. For example, you could post a simple slide about Google’s EEAT (Expertise, Experience, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness) philosophy, or create a quick checklist of SEO writing tips. Both are informative and easy to digest for your audience.

Another idea? Share what you’re reading and how it influences your writing process. Personally, I love connecting with fellow readers on Instagram, and as I said before, I often find that discussions about books inspire fresh perspectives in my work.

Even better, try creating short videos where you talk directly to your followers. Whether you’re sharing insights on how to craft a killer headline or explaining the importance of clear calls to action, video content allows you to engage with your audience in a more personal way.

Content Ideas From My Own Content List

Here are some quick content ideas to help you get started:

  • Create slides with writing tips or industry insights.
  • Share behind-the-scenes moments from your writing process.
  • Post reading recommendations and how they help your writing.
  • Record short videos teaching something valuable to your audience.
