If you’re from Minnesota like me, you know what it’s like to spend half the year in hibernation mode. Once November rolls around—and sometimes even earlier—we pack it in. The patio furniture gets stored away, the winter boots come out, and we mentally prepare to not see green grass again until March or April. It’s just part of the deal.

Winter can be long and, let’s be honest, kind of a bummer. But for me, it’s also one of the most productive times of the year. With fewer distractions (because let’s face it, there’s nowhere to go), I get into full writing mode. This winter, I wrote my first fiction novel—yes, really! More on that coming soon, I promise. I also cranked out some incredible projects for clients and updated my own copywriter’s blog with fresh content.

But now the weather is shifting.

As I write this, I’m looking out the window at a snowless backyard. The trees are still bare, and the grass isn’t green yet, but something has definitely changed. There’s a hint of warmth in the air, and the sun is sticking around longer in the evenings. We’ve even had days in the high 40s and low 50s. After months of icy sidewalks and gray skies, that little shift is enough to make you want to toss your laptop aside and go chase the sun.

So, how do I stay focused when all I want to do is sit on the porch with a cup of coffee and pretend deadlines don’t exist?

Tips for Staying Motivated as a Blog Copywriter

You’ve got the goal in mind—now it’s time to take action. Whether you’re just starting out or looking for a fresh approach, these tips can help you move forward with more clarity (and maybe a little more confidence, too). Here are a few things that help me stay motivated when the weather gets nicer—and might help you, too.

1. Get Outside (Just for a Bit) Can Help You Stay Motivated

You don’t have to shut the blinds and pretend it’s still January. In fact, I’ve found that giving into the weather a little bit can help me stay on track. I try to get out for a 20-minute walk at least once a day. Just around the block, nothing fancy. It clears my head, gives me a quick mood boost, and helps me come back to my desk with a little more energy. Some of my best writing ideas have popped up during these short walks.

2. Lighten Up Your Meals

If you’re anything like me, winter turns into an open invitation to eat all the comfort foods. Hearty stews, creamy pastas, warm bread—it’s all fair game when the temps are in the single digits. But once the weather starts to shift, I like to reset a little. Adding more fruits and veggies to my meals helps me feel more energized and less weighed down. It’s a small switch, but it makes a big difference in how productive I feel throughout the day.

3. Switch Up the Scenery

Sometimes, a change of view can do wonders. If I find myself staring longingly out the window more than at my laptop screen, I grab my laptop and move to a new spot. Often, it is just a different spot in my office—I have a cozy office chair and footrest that can do the trick.

Maybe it’s the kitchen table. Maybe it’s a coffee shop. Maybe I even take my laptop out to the front porch if the sun is shining. Moving around keeps me from getting too restless and reminds me that I don’t have to choose between working and enjoying the weather—I can do both.

4. Make a Spring Writing Projects List

Spring has this fresh-start energy, kind of like January, but with sunshine. So, I use that to my advantage. I make a short list of spring projects I want to work on—not just for my clients, but for myself too. It might be blog ideas I want to develop, like new copywriter blog topics, or updates I want to make to my own website. Giving myself a few new goals helps me feel excited about work again, even as the outdoors becomes more tempting.

5. Let the Weather Work For You

Instead of thinking of the nice weather as a distraction, I try to think of it as a reward. I’ll tell myself: “Write this section, and then you can go sit outside for 10 minutes.” Or, “Finish these two client emails, and then you can walk to the coffee shop.” It turns the nice weather into motivation instead of a roadblock.

6. Remember What You’ve Already Accomplished

If my motivation starts to slip, I look back at what I’ve done. And as a list-maker with a bit of a Type-A personality, this can go a long way to keeping me motivated. I wrote a novel this winter. I kept up with my clients. I created new posts for my copywriter’s blog. That’s something to feel good about. And reminding myself of that helps me keep going—even when the sunshine is calling my name.
