Last year, I had the fun opportunity to go on a cruise with a neighbor and another friend. As a lifelong lover of travel, especially cruises, I found it an amazing experience. We had so much fun that two of us decided to do it again this year.
Our 2026 cruise departed from Orlando on March 6 and returned on March 15. We had three days at sea, along with stops in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas; and St. Croix. It was an incredible trip, and we had such a great time that we are planning to make it a tradition. In fact, we booked our 2027 cruise before we even left the ship.
So why am I sharing all of this?
This post is really for fellow freelance writers who feel nervous about stepping away from work. And I get it. As a full-time freelancer, you only get paid when you are working. There is no PTO, no vacation time, no paid holidays, and no built-in safety net unless you create one for yourself.
I have been in that exact mindset. I love to travel. I want to get away. But time away without pay, especially for nine days, can feel intimidating. But here is what I can tell you. It is worth it.
Plan Ahead
When you plan ahead, you can still keep income coming in. Maybe not at your usual pace, but enough to stay on track. And just as important, you can return to clients who are ready to pick up right where you left off.
Here are a few things I was reminded of after my 2026 spring vacation.
1. My Clients Respected My Time Away
My clients know I will be there for them when I return. Because I have put in the work to build strong relationships, many of them worked with me ahead of my trip. We front-loaded projects so I could keep some income flowing, and then they came back with new work as soon as I returned.
2. I Returned More Fulfilled
Okay, this does not mean I was not fulfilled before. I truly love what I do. But freelancing is hard work. We spend hours creating content for clients, then use the rest of our time to look for new opportunities. You never know when a client might scale back or step away. I have already lost two great clients this year for reasons outside my control, and that is tough.
What I did not fully realize was how much stress I was carrying until I stepped away. That break, along with a healthy dose of Caribbean sunshine, made a bigger difference than I expected.
3. My Eyes are Working Better
I know that sounds a little strange, but hear me out. About two years ago, I started needing readers for my laptop and for reading books. Earlier this year, I even got prescription readers with screen protection. Yet after nine days of being mostly off my devices, my eyes feel noticeably better. I have not needed those readers since I got back. No, this is not a miracle cure, but it does say something about how constant screen time affects us.
4. I am More Rested and Sleeping Better
Fourth, I am sleeping better. And no, I did not bring the ship home with me, even though the motion of the waves was pretty great for sleep.
For some context, I have been a chronic insomniac for much of my adult life, often lying awake worrying about even the smallest things. Since returning, my mind feels quieter at night, and I am falling asleep faster than I have in a long time.
5. I’m a Better Business Owner for Taking the Vacation
Finally, I have a deeper appreciation for myself as a business owner because I made it all work. I planned ahead, communicated with clients, and trusted that things would be okay while I stepped away.
Take the Vacation
So here is my message. Do the planning and take the vacation.
Yes, the work we do can be incredibly fulfilling. I genuinely love my career, and I feel lucky to do what I do. But you also deserve time away. You deserve to rest, recharge, and experience life outside of deadlines and deliverables.
And when you come back, you may find that your writing feels a little clearer, your energy is stronger, and your perspective has shifted in the best possible way.
